![]() We were always hard at work, and it drained us quite a lot – especially during holidays. Game dev is demanding, especially indie game dev. Thanks to this luck, our failures didn't cost us our heads, and we are still here. Today, we see ourselves at the start line, naive dreamers who, on the one hand, had some skill, willing to learn and adapt, and on the other hand, had a lot of luck above all. Our game was even played at the North Pole! Mateusz Mandat, our friend stationed at the tip of the world, sent this unique photo to us.Īlthough the journey was often hard and tricky, we always treated all the slip-ups and failures with introspection, even though sometimes we had no control over the situation. The way we got to know each other is pretty curious and I tend to mention it in every interview about the studio. You could call the founding of the studio itself a success, which would not have been possible without our investors, today close friends, Richard and Oto, who never doubted the abilities of the team. "The Age of Vaporum", as I like to call it, was a time filled with hardship and trials, but also of some success. ![]() We know all too well it sounds like cliche, but those of you who have had direct contact with us know that we actually do take your feedback into account. Whether it's a praise-talk or an earful, be sure to give it to us on any of our social channels or e-mail. We are thankful for any feedback you give us on Vaporum: Lockdown, be it the desktop or the Switch version. We were able to improve the performance significantly, which allowed us to get more high-end effects & visuals into the port for those eye-candy treats. (Well, one member still prefers playing on PC, but he's a “PC protomolecule”, so that doesn't really count.) The game is a breeze to play on Switch now, and we all enjoy it even more than on PC, which is a big claim for us “PC dinosaurs”. Apart from the obvious font size increase, there are plenty of quality-of-life improvements in the port, most notably a heavily streamlined control scheme. We had full control over every aspect of the port the whole time and were able to pack in more quality than before (when previously using a 3rd party to do the job). When designing levels for Vaporum: Lockdown, we built upon what we had learned in Vaporum, using the best parts and avoiding the mistakes. We had to overcome heaps of issues in the obstacle-ridden publishing process of Nintendo, but it paid off! Lockdown also released on Switch [on March 22, 2021, and we are happy to say that the port has turned out well! Our decision to port the game ourselves proved to be correct. We have learned a lot in making both games, and apart from being able to make ends meet doing what you love, the experience itself is the most valuable thing we have gained. Matej and I, trying to come up with cool RPG mechanics.īoth games are a labor of love and so we really appreciate any kind of feedback - be it praise or constructive critique. We are very humbled and thankful for all that! We have received a great response in the form of forum feedback, reviews, and also direct personal correspondence. Much like the first Vaporum, Lockdown is also enjoying positive reception in the community. Vaporum: Lockdown, released on Septemon Steam, GOG [and Humble [(Windows, Mac, Linux), is the second game of our small indie studio. The document is of interest, moreover, both because it is the first to employ the term ‘new found land’ and because it serves to endorse one of Ruddock’s key claims – that William Weston of Bristol led an independent expedition to the New World in 1499. It also looks how I remember Quake, with grotesque-looking enemies in large (usually brown) architecture, yet appearing sharper than ever in 4k and with subtle improvements. Slowdown only reared its ugly head when I moved onto the first expansion pack. Quake has these qualities in spades, now bolstered with a higher, more stable framerate. For me, this is what makes them timeless and enjoyable to this day. When I think about classic ID Software games, I think about fast, smooth and responsive first-person shooting. Nostalgia is a powerful thing and memories become distorted with age – I would say a successful remaster should offer an experience that emulates how someone thinks they remember an old game looking and playing, and Quake does a good job of achieving this. Remasters like this one can be tricky to review as they need to be faithful to the original release while having enough improvements to make them more palatable to modern audiences. It includes the original campaign, the two subsequent expansion packs, another that was developed as part of the 20th anniversary, and a brand-new one developed for this release. Players make their way through levels filled with enemies while avoiding traps and finding colored keys for locked doors, all in first-person. Originally developed by ID Software, this remaster is handled by Nightdive Studios. Its relevance is clear, and this omission from my playlist has always felt like a gap in my gaming CV, now rectified. However, Quake’s influence on gaming is not in doubt, particularly due to it pioneering fully 3D graphics and online multiplayer. In fact, I’ve always seen it as Doom’s less charismatic relation and the brown color palette hinted at a lack of a clear identity which the inconsistent sequels seemed to confirm. ![]() Unlike Doom, it hadn’t been released on every console in existence, and by the time I played it on PC around 2000, it felt archaic in a post Half-Life world. WTF Being unaware of motion controls and thinking my controller needed replacing. LOW Burying the Nine Inch Nails soundtrack in the audio mix. But if you want to see a seminal first-person shooter that?s aged surprisingly well, be sure to hunt this one out.īethesda provided us with a Quake Nintendo Switch code for review purposes.HIGH Fast, smooth shooting that feels timeless. Obviously, if you?ve played Quake at any point in the last 25 years, there?s probably not a pressing need for you to pick it up on current-gen systems - it?s basically the same game here that you could?ve played at any time in the last few decades. It?s a well-worn formula by now, but it?s not hard to see why it was so much fun at the time - I mean, it?s still so much fun. There?s a reason why FPSes have been imitating Quake (and Doom, and Wolfenstein) for the last few decades, and it?s because it makes it so fun and so easy to run into a room, guns blazing, and blast away armies of monsters. There?s something about the way the monsters lurch around, often rising from the dead, that creates a sense of tense dread.Īnd, of course, it helps that Quake?s action is still top-notch. In fact, while I wouldn?t say Quake looks realistic, it definitely feels gloomier and creepier than any of those games I mentioned above. Couple that with the fact it was scored by Trent Reznor, and it?s hard to think of how the game could be any more of its time.īut even if it looks dated, it still pulls off a creepy vibe better than any number of games that have come since then. The graphics are practically unchanged, and if you have a picture in your head of any of those ?90s FPSes, with their weirdly flat-looking monsters and blocky, blurry backgrounds, you?re basically picturing this game. ![]() To be sure, it looks and sounds very much like it came out in the mid-?90s. But you?d be wrong: even if it shows its age, this is still an exceptionally good shooter. Given my antipathy for gaming nostalgia, you might think that I?m not a fan of this Quake re-release 25 years later. I was vaguely aware of it back when it first came out, but it fell into the same big bucket of games that also included games like Doom, Wolfenstein, and Duke Nukem 3D - which is to say, first-person shooters that didn?t interest me all that much at the time. Unlike a lot of people of my generation, I don?t have any fond nostalgic feelings towards Quake. Also on: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X ![]() ![]() I’ve got to say that this alone provides a fairly strong impetus for going with this one brand for as much as possible. It brings up relevant control pages for all detected compatible Logitech equipment. That’s the same software that you use for Logitech’s gaming keyboards, Brio webcam and headsets. Amongst the mouse functions are the kinds of things you might expect, like scrolling or replicating the standard clicks, things seemingly unrelated but convenient like changing the sound volume or playing and pausing, and very mouse specific things such as shifting the dots per inch resolution of the mouse, or switching between the three sensitivity, report rate and button assignment profiles you can use.Īlso, if you aren’t a fan of extra buttons, you can just make the ones you don’t want “Unassigned” so that they do nothing.Īll those things, along with the lighting in the scroll bar and Logitech “G” logo (you can choose the colour), the dots per inch sensitivity level and the “report rate” – the number of times per second the mouse reports its status to the computer – are adjusted using the Logitech Gaming Software. The G703 uses a modest rechargeable battery. Wireless mouses typically just use a regular disposable AA battery for power and often compete on the basis of how long it will last – often more than a year. That’s because it is powered in a very different way to most wireless mouses. The G703 is second from the top of the Logitech gaming heap. You’ll have to click on the Logitech G logo at the top left to get to the gaming site, and there you’ll find the fancy gaming keyboards, headsets and, of course, mice. If you go to Logitech website you’ll search for the G703 in vain if you look under mouses. Must wireless mouses necessarily be slow? Indeed, not, as demonstrated by the Logitech G703 Lightspeed Wireless Gaming Mouse FeaturesĬlearly Logitech keeps its gaming devices and productivity devices as entirely separate things, even though the gadgets often perform the same basic function.
